FROM EMERIL
LIVE TO CHARLIE BROWN, DAVID BENOIT AND HIS FOH
ENGINEER, TRINIDAD SANCHEZ III, FIND TRUE SYSTEMS
P2 AND NEUMANN TLM 103 AN UNBEATABLE DUO
OLD LYME, CONNECTICUT: A combination of True Systems
P2 Analog microphone preamplifiers and a pair of
Neumann TLM 103 large diaphragm microphones is bringing
a new realism to jazz artist David Benoit's live
piano sound. The combination, adopted after a successful
trial on a recent television show taping, not only
won over Benoit and his FOH engineer, Trinidad,
but also the sound engineers on the recent Charlie
Brown and Friends Christmas Tour with Al Jarreau
and Melissa Manchester, for which Benoit was musical
director.
"I travel pretty extensively as tour manager
and front-of-house engineer for David," explains
Sanchez. Recently, Benoit taped a musical segment
for the popular Emeril Live cooking show. "I
used a pair of my Neumann TLM 103 large diaphragm
microphones through the P2 Analog onto DAT, and
when I got back home to listen I could tell the
combination was great."
He continues, "I've always been impressed with
David's engineer, Clark Germain, who does most of
his studio recordings, and when I heard the piano
come up at Emeril Live, it's the closest I've heard
to David's piano in the studio."
The two-channel True Systems P2 Analog offers the
ultimate sonic performance for critical recording
and sound reinforcement applications. A hybrid,
totally balanced, dual-servo, high-voltage design
that provides exceptional transient response, headroom,
imaging and noise performance, the P2 Analog features
selectable M-S decoder, active DIs with impedance
modification capability, dual gain range selection,
and multi-frequency high pass filter. In addition,
the P2 Analog features a Stereo Phase Correlation
display that assists in optimizing microphone placement
for stereo recording.
Contemporary jazz composer-pianist David Benoit,
a three-time Grammy nominee, recently released,
"Right Here, Right Now", his twenty-second
recording as a Solo Artist in 24 years. After the
release of his CD, "Here's to You, Charlie
Brown: 50 Great Years!" (GRP Records) in the
spring of 2000, Benoit developed an entire live
musical tribute to Charles Schulz's Peanuts (tm)
comic strip.
On the 2003 Charlie Brown and Friends Christmas
Tour, says Sanchez, "We have Scott Richards
mixing front-of-house and Mike O'Malley mixing monitors.
I suggested that they might want to give a listen
to the P2 Analog and the TLM 103s. Unfortunately
we didn't use them at rehearsal, but I brought them
out to the first date in Columbus, Ohio and the
guys have been using them ever since on the tour.
They were very impressed with the sound of the piano
with the P2 Analog and the TLM 103s."
"We're taking the TLM 103s from the piano,"
he elaborates, "into the P2 Analog, then splitting
them into the monitor and front-of-house consoles.
David only takes his piano in his monitors, and
what he's hearing is exactly that - the 103s and
the P2, split in stereo."
Sanchez will have plenty of opportunities to use
the True Systems P2 Analog Preamp and Neumann TLM
103 mics in 2004, as Benoit kicks off his own tour
in early 2004.
